What do you miss when you’re not a fan of anything? Fan of Something, Fan of Nothing is my debut documentary. It follows a non-fan as they explore what drives people to fully devote themselves to something or someone from Disney and Froukje fans to PSV supporters and royalists. How does fandom shape their lives? And what does it say about our broader search for meaning, identity and connection?

Personal note
It started with a viral deepfake image posted by Donald Trump of “Swifties for Trump” that quickly lost its context. In response, Taylor Swift publicly supported Kamala Harris and urged her fans to vote. Within 24 hours, over 400,000 people had registered to vote.

I couldn’t believe that a single pop artist could have such political influence in one of the most important elections in the world.

That surprise was the starting point of my film. I’ve never been a fan of anything, I can admire, but I’ve never felt that kind of full devotion. I grew up believing nuance matters more than absolute conviction. At the same time, I work in advertising, a world built on influence, storytelling, and brand-building. This tension personally distant, yet professionally close to how influence works, made fandom fascinating to me. What drives such devotion? What does it mean to be a fan? And what might we, the non-fans, be missing?
